TaylorMade r7 460 Review by BRANDO, April 12, 2008
The stock Reax shaft is a great shaft, contrary to what other people have said in this forum. It does launch the ball high, but I also think that many people tee the ball too high due to stiff shafts in drivers (the stiff shaft makes the ball launch low). A buddy I play with has a 135 mph swing and not only knocks the crap out of this driver, but also keeps it in the fairway. And this is not because the senior flex plays like a regular. Each flex of the reax shafts play like they’re supposed to while still maintaining relatively low torque.
I also believe that the head on the r7 is splendid. The main reason I came out searching for this driver is because I was tired of the melon-head Cobras–they had no sweet spot. This driver clearly has a sweet spot, however is also very forgiving and long.

This Club is by far the longest i’ve ever hit.Bought it in R flex 9.5 with Reax shaft on Neutral Bias and its been amazing.Used to hit my old driver about 240-250, now I hit it about 280-290 and straight as an arrow.Wolud definately reccommend it to any golfer who wants to gain more distance off their drives.

I’ve been on a search, as have many on this website, for the holy grail of drivers. I’ve spent more money than I could ever admit to myself on various drivers. After a starter Dunlop driver, I got fitted for a Cobra F speed and was bombing balls over the back net of the local driving range (Tilden in Berkeley). However, this particular driver was causing me hearing loss due to its aluminum bat sound at impact. Thus began a long odyssey through various drivers. It took me many models and thousands of golf balls to finally find the right combination of shaft and loft with the Taylor Made R7 460 (stiff flex RE-AX, 10.5 deg). This driver set-up will work for you if you rely (as I do) on your muscle and swing speed more than perfect form for distance. The stiff shaft, higher launch angle and forgiveness of this head could make 300 yards an attainable acheivement. Cobra and Taylor Made may have the most forgiving heads out there, but the RE-AX shaft that comes with the 460 provides more predictable energy loading and uncoiling (I also owned a regular shaft on an R7 425, which provided great kick at lower swing speeds). For all you sluggers addicted to attaining that high only a massive drive provides, go with a stiff shafted, high-lofted R7.

Summary:
I have long been a fan of the Taylor Made drivers, the orginal R7 and the 425 are simply two of the best drivers ever made. I was keen to try the 460 after speaking to a number of tour players who were using this club.
I used the club for the first time this weekend and my god, it is incredible, I went with the TP 64 gram Mitsubishi Rayon shaft which I was suspect of but it was superb.
This club is simply the longest and straightest driver I have ever hit. If you are serious about your game, do yourself a favour and check this club out. Play around with the weight settings and get the right launch and flight for your swing and you will never go looking for another driver again.

I’ve been in search of the “ultimate driver” for ages now leaving the TM until last mostly due to the price tag. I’ve tried nearly all of the most highly rated drivers ( Cleveland launcher, TM R5, Ben Hogan Big Ben 3 King Cobra’s etc)and a mix of Draw bias, neutral and offset. This driver is by far the most forgiving of them all, I have a tendency to slice/fade the ball and have set the moveable weights to a draw bias. I’m hitting the baller straighter than ever before and it’s certainly helped my slice where all other drivers have not. It also appears to have added length but only marginally so I can’t claim that it will add 40 50 yards to your drive like some reviews. I only wish that I had invested in this club before now. Quality is superb, it sits at address nicely with the large head inspiring confidence. I don’t think I’ll ever find the “ultimate Driver” to cure all of my faults but this comes close.

This club is a monster on the fairways. I loved the accuracy and could draw my drives anytime I wanted. Easily added 30 yards and more to my drives, and it was very hard to miss hit. Sounds like a cannon going off. Heaps of Fun!!
TaylorMade r7 460 Review by 0greenwood0, May 27, 2008
I was playing a round about a month ago, & decided to share a motorised cart with a fellow player & noticed he had a new driver in his bag, the r7 460,now this guy is a 27 h’cap who never gets close to playing to it& he had 19 points(stableford)on the front 9 , that would normally be his score for 18 !, also he hit a 300 metre (330 yds) drive breeze assisted on one of the par fives 40 metres past my G2.
So at the turn after hitting my tee shot its usuall distance, I asked him if I could have a hit with it so I teed one up & bang ! way past my tee shot, did it again on several other holes & I just couldnt get over how good it felt. The fuji re-ax reg flex yes reg, (normally use stiff but no need with this, its just right for me) is the best shaft ive ever tried NO NEED to upgrade seriously it is that good very stable & powerfull.
I had recently tried the launcher ti & the comp but no better than the g2 so back on ebay they went. What I really like about the r7 is that it is so forgiving & it gives me confidence like no other club has ever done & I have had many top name clubs.
The face looks closed a tad , but even with the weights set in draw set up I dont hook it, (a problem that has plagued me in the past except for the g2).
The bottom line is this club is the dogs bollocks !!( totally outstanding)its only negative is its price tag, but they are pretty reasonable now on ebay, & after I sold the ping I wasnt much out of pocket.
I also tried a new ball which is worthy of a mention the pinnacle exeption, made by Acushnet the same manufacture as titleist, it has the same dimple pattern & cover as the v1, but half the price ! check out the reviews , they are awesome, they should be called exceptional.
Peace.

forgiving, long and straight
i was using the R7 quad, and the extra size of the 460 sure helps consistency
TaylorMade r7 460 Review by ragiiin, June 1, 2008
What can I say about this driver? I gained about 30 yards over the r7 HT (Fuji Speeder 757 shaft). I put in the Rombax 55g in with the 460 and it is simply amazing. I have never hit straighter or longer. Great Club!
TaylorMade r7 460 Review by duffnewbiee, July 3, 2008
Three words to describe this driver; “The Real Deal!”.
I’m just picking up the game again and taking it seriously after being away from it for more than 5yrs. After a few rounds, I finally got my iron play to a decent level, but was always scared to hit my driver b/c it was all over the place. I just couldn’t consistently hit my driver well.
So after considering the Cleveland Hibore XL, at my local golf store I found that the shape & size of this thing was huge! It looked like I had a discus at the end of my shaft. Then I came across the R7’s. This thing was a beauty. Although one model year old I thought this thing was great. I heard lots of great stuff about the clubs. I was originally going for the 425, but opted for maximum forgiveness with the 460.
Well I unwrapped it today and let’s just say that this club just wants to straighten out the ball. I’d say 5/8 shots I first hit the club (with no warm up) was straight and would be playable in the fairway. Not only that, my hits were going further, landing at about 220ish and rolling to about 250 or more. (I’m a small guy so 250 is plenty for me right now) Even on off-center hits it would go straight!
This is the best money I’ve spent. Thanks TaylorMade!

Absolute cannon. The club looks fantastic at address. Very solid, powerful feel and sound. I bought this club after contemplating the new Superquad. The Superquad is more adjustable, but I figured I’d always set up for a draw anyways, so why pay the extra for the ability to adjust for neutral and fade. Also, the UST V2 shaft is awesome. Great feel and power with an attractive matte finish. Best shaft I’ve hit. All in all this is the best driver I’ve owned and some of the smartest golf money I’ve spent.
TaylorMade r7 460 Review by John Mag, July 15, 2008
All I can say is what took me so long to find this driver?!?! I’ve been through dozens of drivers over the past 4-5 years, many of which I’ve built myself in the hopes of saving a little money, and being able to experiment with different shafts, etc. Well, none of that got me anywhere. It got so bad that I put my driver in the corner for almost a year and played only with my 3-wood off the tee. I hit the ball a long way, so even my 3 wood (Taylor Made V-steel) would usually give me 250-260 yards, but I was only carrying 13 clubs. I wanted to find a driver I could hit reasonably straight, even if it wasn’t the longest one out there. I was plain tired of not being able to depend on my driver at all. So the other day I see a R7 460 with the stiff Re-ax 60 gram shaft in the demo bin at the course, and ask to try it out. WOW!!!! I hit that thing so straight it was hard to believe. But after 5 or 6 holes, it was obvious that this was a superior piece of golf technology beyond anything I’d ever tried before. I played the rest of the round with it, only missed one fairway, and shot 76 with a double on the last hole (short game, not the driver’s fault). The demo was a 10.5, and it hit the ball slightly high for me (I have a 115 mph swing speed). So today I bought a 9.5 in the exact same spec’s, and played 9 holes with it. Afterward, I went to the range and hit about 30 good balls with it. This is without a doubt the best driver/shaft combination I’ve ever used. Super straight, and pretty darn long.

I bought the r7 460 a couple of months ago. Took it down south and out west for a couple of golf trips. It worked great for me. I figured, what the heck join the technology wave of the 21st. century. Wow was I pleased! I’m hitting the ball consistently 240 to 255 yds. Hey, thats good for me. But the big PLUS with the r7 is that I am in almost EVERY fairway. The r7 is a wonderful driver for me. Easy to swing. Just feels good, and sounds great on contact.

I am a lefty that likes to push the ball away from my body. I thought buying this driver would draticaly change the shape of my shots. Didn’t exaclty happen. But the weight system does work and it does change your shot a little bit. Since I got this driver my shots have been more accurate and the distance from the tee have been further. 15 to 20 yards.
Great driver. Not sure if I want to go with taylor made for a fairway driver. (will be my next purchase)
So far worth the money. Off the tee with this club my drives are solid.

The best driver i ever hit period!! Let me tell you, if you are a fader or a slicer and you want help square the club face this is your answer. I bought the 10.5 loft with stiff shaft and played my first round with it yesterday and i never sliced the ball once. my playing partner who i have played golf with for over 18yrs said that was the best i have driven the ball ever and i shot and 81 with a 131 slope. Simply the best!!!

i am using the stiff flex fujikura reax with 9 degrees of loft. Since buying it my game has improved significantly. I recently finished second in my club championship shooting a nett 62. The highlight of the day was being on the 18th green in one, this hole is 321 yards long.(i am only 13)!!!!!
TaylorMade r7 460 Review by STEVE, September 1, 2008
I normally post reviews very quickly after i buy a new golf toy but wanted to wait until i had played with this one for awhile as i have been fooled before. No fooling here, this is the BEST DRIVER ON THE MARKET, PERIOD! I say that with full confidence having hit EVERY one out there and having owned 3 others this season but this one is staying in my bag for a long time to come as i have completely lost interest in even trying anything else now (though the rapture is the only driver i havent hit).
Mine has a proforce 65 gold tip stiff shaft on it in regular flex and is lofted at 10.5. Like i said earlier, i have been searching long and hard for a new driver this season and have been fooled before by other by having good days or just the occasional blast but this Driver is straight as an arrow EVERY TIME and i am not a great ball striker. Fortunately for me you dont have to be with this driver. A nice easy swing produces a perfect trajectory and good distance and when i catch it on the screws LOOK OUT it fly’s a mile. I am not a big hitter and to be honest my average before this driver was probably barely 200 yards and could have landed anywhere but after 4 rounds of golf and 2 days at the range i can count the number of bad shots with this club on one hand and they were ALL due to awful swings. Last time out on the course i hit 14 of 14 fairways and had the confidence to go over havards i had prevously laid up short of. My once over used 3 wood now NEVER sees the tee anymore and i couldnt be happier. I cant play enough golf anymore because of all the fun im having with this club. I use to be the guy who feared a crowd on the tee box but now i welcome it. Not to brag but Saturday i blasted this driver 293 yards on a par 4 and was in disbelief that i had actually hit it that far as my prevous long drive before this club was maybe 270. Im not saying that i can hit that big a drive everytime but i am saying that i am ALWAYS playing from the short grass now and that i did increse my average drive by about 20 yards which is probably due to the extra roll im getting by hitting the fairway everytime now.
I never believed there was a magic driver but this one is as close to that as i can imagine. If you are like me and feared the tee box then get you one of these and fear it no more.
I love this club so much that i went out and spent cRaZy money to add the matching 3 wood (which isnt anything special) but this driver is!
