The TaylorMade R580 XD comes with a 440cc head size and is fitted with ultra light graphite shafts to promote a higher trajectory, a longer carry and a faster swing speed. Because they offer such a large hitting area above the CG, players will be able to hit more shots that achieve a high launch angle and low spin-rate, which is the optimum combination for achieving maximum distance.

TaylorMade R580 XD Review by zachary, April 2, 2008
The Taylor Made R580 XD consistantly proves itself to be a superior driver. It’s technology is not the latest but can certainly perform with the newer weird looking drivers. Stay classic with the Taylor Made R580 XD if you want a solid driver than has a balance of forgiveness and workability, and by the way, sounds great too.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by Vincent G., April 28, 2008
I’m 27 years old, 160lbs, about 5′7, and usually play a very high nineties game. I’ve been playing golf for about 2-3 years and I started with a Wilson Fatboy driver. The Fatboy was good to me, but it was time for a change.
I bought the 580 XD regular flex and the first few times I used it, I couldn’t get used to it. It got to the point where I thought I’d have to revert back to the Fatboy, which was real disappointment. However, I finally got the hang of it and wow!
The sweet spot is a mile wide and I’ve never had more consistency in fairway shots. The 580 is unbelievably forgiving. Distance-wise, I’ll be fair and say I’ve added an average of 15-25 yards to my drive.
Value-wise I couldn’t go wrong.
Despite the fact that you may have difficulties hitting it at first, as I did, keep at it and I’m sure you’ll be more than happy that you made the investment.
Overall, I’m extremely impressed with this club and would strongly recommend the 580 to anyone wanting to improve their drive or someone who just wants a real smooth, forgiving, great valued driver.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by Isaiah W, May 20, 2008
I purchased this driver after hitting a relative’s King Cobra, and getting hooked on the feel of titanium drivers felt. I’ve never really had a driver of my own, so I figured now was the time. After the first few swings with my Taylor Made R580 driver I was hooked. I was allowed to take it out of the store, to the driving range, and I was very impressed. Long, straight, and very forgiving! If you have a decent swing, and need a good driver, look no further than the Taylor Made R580.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by call me andie, May 22, 2008
Ive had the SQ and R5 and the R7 and i always go back to this driver it really is the best… i put the new aldila vs proto shaft in it at 8.5* and i bomb the ball long and straight!!! Fred couples switched to this r580xd and he still bombs it! no more trying new drivers i’m sticking with this one!!!
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by boygenius75, May 27, 2008
Found it really tough to get used to the first few times out to the range, huge clubhead. All I could hit was a high slice or really dead sounding shots. Finally got the feel for it the last few times out, and it is amazing. I’ve never been able to hit balls out of the range over the netting, but now can do it consistently, I would say it added 30 - 50 yards to my drive (I previously would hit 250 - 270).
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by allig8r, June 4, 2008
I have used my R580XD driver now for over 3 years. It provides me with consistent and accurate distance when hit sweetly and even when I don’t strike the ball well, it is very forgiving. I have tried other drivers but always come back to this one. Now that it is illegal (heavens knows why !!) what can I replace it with ? Why can’t TaylorMade come up with a new legal replacement that is as goods as the 580 XD – I’ve tried their other offerings, but nothing comes close to this one.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by xenon-31, June 7, 2008
The best driver I’ve played so far.. If its good enough for Mike Weir and Fred Couples in 2006 then its good enough for me in 2007.
Its almost like cheating its so easy to hit, the face sits comfortably square and does not worry my hook with off set at address. Its a strange feeling driver but after the first round i was in love. I have the low torque, firm tip, stiff MAS shaft, because my swing speed is around 110mph, the combination is perfect. Its also the longest driver I’ve hit. Longer than my R7 HT and Titleist 905t. Although not as workable. The ball flight seems to be primarily straight, although i can work if i have to.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by HammerHead, July 3, 2008
First off, I have been playing golf for 25 years and have participated in State Tournaments, PGA Pro-Ams and other local tournaments. I play over 90 rounds of golf each year and have been paired with every type of golfer out there. I get a kick out of how many 80 and 90 shooters who claim they consistently hit their drives 290 - 300 yards. They don’t know how far those distances really are. But that’s OK, keep telling yourselves that you hit it that far. Just a side note: The average driving distance on the PGA tour is 272 yards. Maybe you guys know something the Tour Players don’t. As for the TM r580xd. “It is the BEST driver I have ever played, period.” I bought one in left-handed, 9.5 degrees of loft and a stiff stock shaft. Immediately replaced the shaft with an Aldilla NV shaft in stiff flex and this club was ready to do some damage. I hit my first drive close to 375 yards “ONLY KIDDING” My driving game is long and solid. I average about 270-280 with this club with the occasional, down-hill, down-wind drive of 300-320 yards. Maybe those guys play every hole downwind and down-hill. The club easily works the ball left to right or right to left. FOr $150 it is, by far, the BEST value on the golfing market. Get yours today before they are all GONE!!!!!!
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by nodnod, July 5, 2008
I bought this driver for about 3 years ago. For the past two years i have looked at other drivers but I can’t afford it replace this one because it is so damn good. I hit the fairways at 90 % every time - it’s true, but I would chosen to hit the ball a little bit further with it. I think reason is that I’ve got too stiff shaft for me. (Grafalloy Blue Stiff)

Grwat club for the price. Improved my game and distance by twenty yards off the tee, I love it.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by TE104, August 4, 2008
UNBELIEVABLE! I have always had trouble with my driver and considered myself lucky when I hit the fairway and I was too stubborn to go with my 3-wood so I perfected my “Tiger IN THE Woods” impersonation. I bought the r580 on close out at a local shop and had a ok round my first time out. My second round with it I eased up my swing and let the club do the work. My playing partner got sick of hearing me say “I love this club” I hit 6 out 9 fairways (missed 2 others by inches) and hit the ball almost forty yards longer. 40 YARDS!!! My average drive with my old driver was about 240′ish with my longest being 275. I averaged close to 280 and had one just shy of 300 in the middle of the fairway. I am not usually not this high on a club but it is well worth every penny especially now that price has come way down.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by mark ashton, August 9, 2008
Demo’d a new R580 this past summer and was just as straight as always but was 20-30 yards longer and measured out my longest drive on a flat fairway at 325. Needless to say I’m convinced it is the best driver I’ve ever hit.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by heRmeS, August 12, 2008
I usually change my driver once a year. I had this Taylor Made R580 driver in my bag for the last 12 months. I was tempted to try new drivers from Titlest and Nike but after every game, I am content with 580 driver. I am not long but I tend to be in the fairway most of the time.
TaylorMade R580 XD Review by Skyslyder, April 1, 2009
I’ve played the R580 XD for several years now. It’s still a quality club today. Last year I was feeling the need for extra distance and was considering a Ping G10, so I took my R580xd with a regular stock MAS shaft in for a swing speed analysis. I have a fairly smooth swing and was registering in the low 80s with it (getting older sux). I compared it to a G10 with the TFC129 regular shaft and was surprised to find my swing speed jumped about 5-7 mph on average. Eureka! I eBayed a G10 shaft pull (about 30 bucks) and installed in the R580xd (25 bucks). Instant 15-20 yards with more accuracy to boot. It keeps up with my buddy’s Burner and is like a very sweet new club. If you already have the club or can buy one cheap and are on a budget, give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed and can use the extra 100-150 bucks for a few lessons.
